Stan Schaetzel
Stan Schaetzel completed his studies in aeronautics
at London University and obtained a post graduate degree from Imperial
College - then worked for two years for the Bristol Aeroplane Company.
He migrated to Australia at the end of 1950 and
worked at the Government Aircraft Factories in Melbourne, where
he played a leading role in the design and development of guided
missiles Malkara, Ikara and Turana. In 1970 he was recruited by
Hawker de Havilland in Sydney as their Technical Director. Later
he became Chairman and Managing Director of Australia's first Space
company, Auspace, which was jointly owned by HdH and the French
Company, Matra Espace.
In 1972 he was elected fellow of the Royal Aeronautical
Society in London and, in 1977, was elected Fellow of the Australian
Academy of Technological Sciences. In 1985 he was nominated by the
Australian Government to represent industry on the Council of the
Australian National University. He took part in several government
overseas missions, including those to the USSR, Japan and China.
During his professional life, Stanley issued over 200 papers in
Australian, British and American journals.
He retired from Hawker de Havilland in July,
1989 and began his second career as a writer. In addition to several
monographs printed by the ANU, his published books involve 'Post
War Aeronautical Development in Australia', 'Homo not yet Sapiens',
'Through the Macroscope', 'Satan-CEO', (this book was also translated
into French and published in Paris in 2001) and 'The Coming of Age'.
'Through the Macroscope' and 'Satan-CEO' are available through Richmond
Books.
In 2003 Stan was awarded the Centenary Medal
'for services to defence science'.
